Construction Safety and Effect on Operations

A significant amount of construction in close proximity to the existing college operations is required for this project.  As a result, the College is enacting precautions to facilitate safety for ongoing operations (impacting students, staff, visitors, etc.) and safety requirements for the contractors themselves.  The overview of these considerations is provided in the two sections below.

Safety Considerations - College Operations

The following actions are anticipated to provide for the ongoing safety of students, staff and visitors during the construction period:
  • The impact of parking will be minimized to the greatest extent possible; the existing parking area under the new building footprint and limited other space will be needed
  • Construction operations will be limited to confined areas which are properly enclosed using fencing
  • Entry and exit to the building from the parking lot will be modified to occur outside of the construction area (located to existing stairway)
  • New ADA access will be provided at the street-side drop-off of the existing building during construction
  • Egress, as needed to meet fire code, will be provided at other select areas near the construction
  • Access for delivery and operations such as trash pick-up will be maintained during construction
  • Interior renovations will be completed in a manner to maintain enrollment with minimal relocation of staff and teams
  • Interior temporary partitions will be placed a select areas adjacent to new construction for protection
  • Stairways and egress will be maintained during the renovation of the existing building
  • The team will work to provide for continual operation of phones, data, alarms, power and life safety systems during the construction
  • The College and Construction Team will communicate weekly regarding college operations and coordination between operations and construction

Safety Considerations - Construction

The following actions are anticipated to provide for the ongoing safety of construction personnel on site:

  • A safety plan governing the project will be part of each contract, and will require safety programs from each contractor to be submitted and accepted
  • The project will be governed by OSHA regulations
  • Safety will be discussed at project meetings occurring about three times every two weeks
  • Contractors will be required to hold their own safety meetings and  "tool-box talks"
  • Material Safety Data Sheet information will be maintained for project materials
  • Special pre-installation meetings will be held for major building systems installation and include discussions on safety related to the installation
